    A Modification of the Response Method of Tidal Analysis

    An easily implemented extension of the standard response method of tidal analysis is outlined. The modification improves the extraction of both the steady and the tidal components from problematic time series by calculating tidal response weights uncontaminated by missing or anomalous data. Examples of time series containing data gaps and anomalous events are analyzed to demonstrate the applicability and advantage of the proposed method

    Research Brief No. 12 - The effect of work arrangements on perceived work-family balance

    The combined demands of the modern work world and raising a healthy family have many Canadian struggling to find enough time. Canadians are working more and more hours while wages largely remain stagnant. In order to address this growing concern, alternate work arrangements have been increasingly used to help employees strike some degree of work-family balance and decrease related issues of absenteeism and turnover in the workplace. This research explores the effect of three unique work strategies — flexible schedules, shift work and self-employment — on men and women in dual-earner families. It examines each arrangement’s impact on reported satisfaction with balance between family and work lives. Results indicate that using flexible schedules and increasing employees’ enjoyment of their work can help promote work-family balance

    Myelin contributes to the parallel orientation of axonal growth on white matter in vitro

    BACKGROUND: Brain and spinal cord white matter can support extensive axonal growth. This growth is generally constrained to an orientation that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fiber tract. This constraint is presumably due to permissive and non-permissive substrates that are interleaved with each other and oriented in parallel within the tract. RESULTS: Embryonic chick sympathetic neurons were cultured on cryostat sections of rat brain and the orientation of neurite growth on white matter was assessed. To determine if haptotaxis is sufficient to guide parallel neurite growth, neurons were cultured under conditions designed to interfere with interactions between growing neurites and factors that act as biochemical contact guidance cues but not interactions with haptotactic cues. Under these conditions, neurites extending on white matter were not exclusively oriented in parallel to the fiber tract, suggesting that biochemical cues are involved. To assess the role of myelin in guiding parallel neurite growth, neurons were cultured on myelin-deficient corpus callosum. These neurons also extended neurites that were not constrained to a parallel orientation. Moreover, preincubation with NGF and treatment with cAMP analogs, manipulations that attenuate overall myelin-mediated inhibition of neurite growth, also led to a reduced parallel orientation of neurite growth. CONCLUSIONS: The present studies suggest that some of the relevant factors that constrain axonal growth on white matter are not haptotactic in nature and appear to be partly mediated by factors that are associated with myelin and may involve myelin-associated "inhibitors"

    SeisCORK engineering design study

    The goal of SeisCORKs is to make simultaneous and co-located seismic, pressure, temperature, pore water chemistry and pore water biology measurements in the seafloor. We want to see the small events in the vicinity of the borehole for three reasons: 1) After an event fluid may flow in the formation in response to the changing stress regime. Down to what magnitude of event do the pressure transients in the well respond? 2) Fluid flow causes small earthquakes. One mechanism for example is by changing the temperature of the rocks which expand and contract, altering the stress regime. We want to look for this fluid flow. 3) Laboratory studies of rock deformation show that shear fracture is preceded by the coalescence of interacting tensile microcracks which are observed as “acoustic emissions”. By placing high frequency geophones next to faults it may be possible to observe these “acoustic” precursors to rock failure. Since in reservoirs on land small events appear in the frequency band 400-800Hz, no one has yet tried to observe them in oceanic crust. SeisCORKs also obviate the considerable logistical, administrative, and clearance difficulties associated with scheduling a shooting ship to run offset VSPs. We resolved to start with a “tubing conveyed” SeisCORK configuration consisting of four three-component sondes at 50m separation lowered on the outside of 4.5in casing (or drill pipe) inside 10-3/4in casing.Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation under Contract Nos.     BCG Cell Imaging Using Scanning Probe Microscopy

    Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to obtain images of the surface of whole, intact BCG (bacille Calmette Guerin, a mycobacterium) cells in air and under solution by immobilizing the cells onto glass slides (AFM only) or highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The technique used for AFM imaging involved depositing a submonolayer of cells under a centrifugal force followed by fixation/dehydration using polar organic solvents. AFM images agree well with images from light and electron microscopy and showed large numbers of BCG cells in their distinctive cord arrangement. The AFM also proved useful for identifying extracellular microgranules which cannot be seen with light microscopy. For STM imaging, the hydrophobicity of BCG enabled strong adhesion from aqueous solution onto graphite. STM images of BCG could only be obtained while scanning in aqueous solution, and the cells showed a large variation in contrast when different samples were imaged. The STM provided greater detail of surface features than the AFM and was able to produce images of periodic layers corroborating observations made by transmission electron microscopy

    This article explores relationships between teaching aims and student knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust in discussion of selected findings from two large-scale empirical studies conducted in English secondary schools. It draws on the work of educational theorists Gert Biesta and Michael Young in order to extend and expand upon the dominant, dichotomizing discourse of “historical versus non-historical” approaches within which much existing Holocaust education literature has previously been framed. Following Young, the article asks: What forms of knowledge of the Holocaust are most “powerful” in terms of facilitating student understanding? And further: Which teaching aims are best suited to ensuring all students have access to these

    Leaders and laggards in the pursuit of an EU just transition

    The just transition from coal, oil, and gas to renewable energy sources involves commitment from all EU states. But who is leading, or lagging? We apply an innovative DeePeR framework to identify these states, using open-access quantitative global data from multiple sources, by evaluating the energy and equity dimensions of Distributive, Procedural and Restorative justice. Using rank percentile scores, we assessed EU nations\u27 level of fossil fuel dependency (including both energy and financial dependency) and distributional inequality, their fossil fuel CO2 emissions, climate finance pledges and a calculated procedural justice score, and their commitment to modern renewable electricity output and rankings on fair and renewable jobs. We find that EU states\u27 performances on just transition are distinct across four broad regions; Scandinavia, eastern Europe, western Europe, and the Mediterranean. We discuss the nuances of fossil fuel embeddedness in the EU. This is followed by reflection on the importance of embedding fairness in the deployment of new renewable jobs. Finally, we consider the implications for a better-targeted financial mechanism for just transition alongside a fossil fuel divestment strategy
